10.00am

Keynote:             Trends in Cloud Computing

Speaker:              Steve Bittinger
Gartner, Canberra

Synopsis:             A look at Gartner research into cloud computing, current trends and anticipated changes over the next few years.  Some focus will be given to the applicability to Higher Education and Research, but also the influence of social media and mobility on how members may approach cloud computing.

10.45am

Topic:                   Legal Issues Associated with the Cloud

Speaker:              Saveria Dimasi
Executive Director, Legal Services, University of Melbourne
President, Society of University Lawyers (SOUL)

Synopsis:             Use of the cloud introduces complex legal issues in particular with respect to data sovereignty and jurisdiction.  Negotiating contracts in the clouds requires consideration of these issues; in addition to this, legal advice associated with the cloud has proven to vary considerably.  A joint approach to cloud contracts may be of assistance.

11.30am

Topic:                   The Cloud-Ready Data Centre

Speaker:              Phil County
Victoria University

Synopsis:             New and updated data centres need to implemented with consideration of the cloud and/or external services.  Victoria University have been developing their data centre capability – with the cloud in mind.

12.00pm

Lunch                   Lunch will be provided in the ballroom foyer.

1.30pm

Topic:                   Research in the Cloud

Speaker:              Glenn Moloney
NeCTAR

Synopsis:             In this era of digital connectivity, NeCTAR is using existing and new information and communications technologies to create new digital efficiencies specifically for the needs of Australian Researchers.

In this session, we will look at the services that NeCTAR is building in the Cloud, including a demonstration of some of the services.

2:00pm

Topic:                   Cloud Security

Speaker:              Jason McClure
Saltbush Group

Synopsis:             Hosting applications and data outside of the data centre, campus or country introduces unique security issues.  Cloud services are structured to meet the needs of many individuals and organisations, and therefore may not meet the needs of a particular institution.  Control may be relinquished, but the responsibility for security remains.  In this session we will look at the top security concerns that should be considered when moving services to the cloud.

2.20pm

Topic:                   AARNet Community Cloud

Speaker:              Angus Griffin
AARNet

Synopsis:             Cloud services are typically large, international services being provided from the US.  This presents issues not only related to jurisdiction, but may also result in services that are not well aligned to the needs of the Australian market.

In this session, AARNet will look at the services that have been provided by other NREN’s around the world, and explore gaps within Australia that may provide an opportunity for AARNet and the sector.

2.40pm

Case Study:        The Onion and the Cloud

Speaker:              TBA

Synopsis:             Different cloud models are appropriate for different business needs.  This session will look at the consolidation of data centres, and preparing for various services to be located within the cloud – be that private, community or public cloud.
