Improving Student Success
Project Name: Tertiary Success for Everyone – Ōritetanga
Institution: University of Waikato
Project Overview: The University of Waikato is committed to delivering a world-class education and provides a suite of support services and learning development opportunities aimed at enhancing student success outcomes. The Tertiary Success for Everyone project was born out of a wider initiative to create radical and innovative change in practice to profoundly improve student outcomes and fast-track further improvements in graduation rates of learners. This project worked with a cross-section of University stakeholders to source data through the student voice, insights from machine learning, tracking student campus interactions and coursework completion. A specialist team built the data sets to analyse and understand the catalysts for disengagement, eventually causing students to withdraw or fail to qualify, and presented these via a dashboard application for stakeholders to understand. The insights from this data now enables the University to transform the design of programs of study and support services to better enable student success.
Innovation in Teaching and Learning
Project Name: The UNSW Makerspace Network ‘Making’ web application
Institution: UNSW Sydney
Project Overview: The UNSW Makerspace network consists of multiple Makerspaces, dozens of Labs, hundreds of machines and thousands of project solutions. Safety is paramount in these spaces and the ‘Making’ web application enables students to complete essential safety training. Upon completion of this, they are awarded a digital badge which allows them to book those machines in the Makerspace that they are trained to safely operate.
Excellence in Research Support
Project Name: Publications Harvesting Project
Institution: Griffith University
Project Overview: The Publications Harvesting Project has transformed publication and research outputs management at Griffith University. Through the implementation of Symplectic Elements, more that 80% of research outputs are now automatically discovered and accurately added to the Annual Collection for reporting. This has improved workload efficiency for professional and academic staff, and improved research output reporting performance, decreasing processing times from 12 weeks to 10 Days.
Project Name: Assessment Timing Tracker
Institution: Monash University
Students are suffering ‘student load stress’ as a result of multiple assessments from different units due or scheduled on or around the same date, a recent student survey revealed. This manifested in student difficulties with both assignment and exam preparation.
An interactive dashboard known as the Assessment Timing Tracker (ATT) was developed in Power BI to display a calendar visualisation of all the student’s commitments, assessment weight and due dates from all of their enrolled units. This allows academics to review the dates that their enrolled students are already committed to for other subjects (highlighted by low to significant impact) and plan their own assessments accordingly to ensure the student’s load is spread across semester. This implementation in January 2020 has transformed the way that Academics operate and the way they engage and interact with their students while at the same time increasing productivity of students and Academics.
